% of West Hollywood renters compared to other cities

The following chart compares the share of West Hollywood residents who are renters to the numbers for selected cities. You can see the exact numbers by hovering over or touching the bars. West Hollywood’s 78% share stands out.

Source: US Census Bureau, American Community Survey, 2011-2013, Tables B25008 and B26001. Number of people living in renter-occupied housing units divided by the total population, which is the number of renters plus the number of owners plus the number of people in group quarters. The owner % for New York City was rounded up for presentation.

West Hollywood’s share is at the high end of nearby cities. For example, West Hollywood has a much higher share than Culver City, where renters make up only 43% of residents. It has a higher share than Los Angeles at 60%. It even has a higher share than Santa Monica, where 66% of residents are renters.

If we look farther away, neither San Francisco nor New York City has as many renters as West Hollywood on a percentage basis. San Francisco has 57% and New York City has 64%. Only if we focus on one part of New York City, the Borough of Manhattan, do we see a share (76%) close to West Hollywood’s.

This isn’t new. The city’s high proportion of renters dates to at least 1990 and probably before the City was incorporated in 1984. For the numbers from 1990, 2000, and 2010, see the “West Hollywood General Plan 2035: 2013-2021 Housing Element Technical Appendix,” December, 2013, p. 44.
