Short answer: 42,000 (estimated)

If we want to do something more about traffic in West Hollywood, one place to look is people commuting to or from the city. If, for example, a commuter switched from driving to transit or biking, that would be 10 fewer car trips per week on our streets.

So how many people commute to, from, or within West Hollywood? About 42,000, based on my analysis of 2011-13 Census data. That’s 20% more than the city’s whole population.

commuters

Why so many? Based on the same analysis, only 20% of jobs here are filled by residents and only 24% of working residents work in the city. If you exclude home-based occupations, then only 11% of jobs here are filled by residents and only 13% of working residents work in the city. So a lot of residents leave the city for work every morning and even more arrive for work from elsewhere.

Note: I’m using estimates based on the American Community Survey rather than another Census tool (“OnTheMap”), because the estimates seem more consistent to me.
